Rhodes College's Crossroads to Freedom Project

Crossroads to Freedom is a special initiative at Rhodes College (Memphis, TN) [1] that links a digital archive of Civil Rights materials from Memphis to community engagement and education. In order to perfectly preserve and usefully describe the digital objects created during the archiving process, we are storing the objects in Fedora 2.1.x and describing them a subset of Dublin Core, which is built into every Fedora-stored object by default.

In order to ease the process of loading objects into Fedora, the Crossroads project is using ELATED [2] to upload and describe the image, text, and audio/video files. ELATED contains a simple, useful interface to deal with Fedora objects within collections, so that logical structures of objects with a collection or sub-collections within a collection created in ELATED are structured the same within Fedora. ELATED also brings a simple authentication scheme to Fedora, shortening the time to get a Fedora repository up and running.

In order to display the Crossroads to Freedom collection, the project is building a custom web-based front-end that will run under a Tomcat Java application server, using JSP as the presentation layer and compiled Java class files to provide the functionality. This interface is being designed and implemented to provide a rich-media experience while also allowing for data-driven discovery and interrelated metadata. Handwritten pages can be seen their native form, and their text has been transcribed and encoded in TEI (the Text Encoding Initiative format) [3], allow for it to be indexed and then viewed in context on the written page.

Questions about the use of Fedora within the Crossroads to Freedom project can be directed to pennington@rhodes.edu.

Pergamos Digital Library

Pergamos is an integrated, end-to-end DL system we have developed atop FEDORA to host the numerous diverse collections of University of Athens, Greece. Pergamos uses digital object prototypes (DOPs) to effectively capture, express and utilize the various digital object types and/or classes involved in Pergamos collections (such as photos, documents, proceedings, notebooks etc).

The system is available at [4]. This public Pergamos instance currently hosts the University's Historical Archive, but more collections will be made available in the next months. Please also note that most material is described in Greek.
